Kilnhurst historically developed in the 14th century with the Monks of Roche Abbey and has laboured through iron works, steel works and coal mining.  It is now a modest sized town with few amenities and little industry.

The main shopping is done on Victoria Street (main road from Swinton going towards Rotherham via Hooton Roberts).

Dustbins are emptied Monday with the exclusion of Glasshouse Lane (Kilnhurst Hall Farm) which is done on Thursday.

There is no train station (Swinton is approx a five minute drive away) but there are a number of buses.  For further information on times please contact the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Tel (01709) 51 51 51.

HISTORY

The Mexborough and Swinton Heritage Group purchased a Death Penny which was sent to a Kilnhurst Soldiers family when he was killed during the War.  The family was traced, a script produced and  both the Penny and script donated to Kilnhurst people and held in the Kilnhurst Community Centre.  Ken Wyatt also visited the soldiers school and gave a talk.

Rotherham Council (as with others in the area) run monthly 'community involved' meetings.  The Assembly which covers the Kilnhurst area is called Wentworth Central.   Agenda/minutes available via http://www2.rotherham.gov.uk/minutes/ wentworthcentra_/default.htm.

CURRENT EVENTS/LOCAL ISSUES

  • The Wentworth Central Assembly lead by Keith Goulty, local councillor and assisted by Alan Shaw, have agenda items from both kids from the local school and members of the Parkgate and Rawmarsh Community Partnership.
    • PC3418 Sarah Cross, Community Constable for Kilnhurst and member of the Community Safety Team.
    • Rev Jill Marsh, High Street Centre and Methodist Church at Rawmarsh.
    • Neighbourhood Warden Service funding will cease in March 2004 and concern was expressed that this well used and invaluable service was going to be lost.  The Assembly asked if both the local council and MP could be approached re providing funding.  Rotherham Council confirmed that a report to this effect had already been produced and will be discussed during September.
