Kilnhurst historically developed in the 14th century with the Monks of Roche Abbey and has laboured through iron works, steel works and coal mining. It is now a modest sized town with few amenities and little industry. The main shopping is done on Victoria Street (main road from Swinton going towards Rotherham via Hooton Roberts). Dustbins are emptied Monday with the exclusion of Glasshouse Lane (Kilnhurst Hall Farm) which is done on Thursday. There is no train station (Swinton is approx a five minute drive away) but there are a number of buses. For further information on times please contact the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Tel (01709) 51 51 51.
The Mexborough and Swinton Heritage Group purchased a Death Penny which was sent to a Kilnhurst Soldiers family when he was killed during the War. The family was traced, a script produced and both the Penny and script donated to Kilnhurst people and held in the Kilnhurst Community Centre. Ken Wyatt also visited the soldiers school and gave a talk.
